Global Gray Cast Iron Market Insight February 16, 2022 Comments

The Gray Cast Iron market is expected to continue to grow in the next few years. According to the WK-chem Research “Global Gray Cast Iron Professional Survey Report 2022, Forecast to 2027”, The increasing demand for cast iron from automobile and machine manufacturers as well as the rising demand from the construction sector are some of the key drivers expected to propel growth in this market during the forecast period. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the 2022-2027 period is projected to be 3.9% base on WK-chem Research regression analysis model.
Analysts’ Viewpoint:
“One of gray cast iron’s biggest pros is also its biggest con. The graphite flakes that give gray iron its added lubrication and resistance to wear, also allows areas of weakness in the metal where fractures can begin. These fractures can cause splits and breakage. Fracturing is why gray iron has low tensile and impact strength. In the future, how to overcome such difficulties will be a question worthy of consideration by manufacturers.”said Smith, Senior analyst, WK-chem Research.
Market insight:
Gray Cast Iron refers to cast iron with flake graphite. It is called gray cast iron because the fracture is dark gray when broken. The main components are iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur and phosphorus. It is the most widely used cast iron, and its output accounts for more than 80% of the total output of cast iron. Gray cast iron is one of the most versatile, tough, and ductile types of ferrous alloy. It has wide use in applications such as machine manufacture, automobile parts, tooling components, and others which require high strength with good fatigue resistance at elevated temperatures. The production of gray cast iron must be operated by workers on-site. Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, companies have suspended production and employees have stayed at home and cannot go out to work. The production, sales and operation of enterprises have been hit hard, which has hindered the development of the gray cast iron industry.
Competition Landscape:
Some of the major players in the Gray Cast Iron market are Tos Met Foundry, Qingdao Evergreen Machinery, Borui Casting International, Pacific Alloy Casting, CFS Co., Ltd, Willman Industries, Atlas Foundry.
Segmentation of Gray Cast Iron Market:
On the basis of Type, Global Gray Cast Iron Market is segmented into Ferrite, Ferrite-Pearlite, Pearlite. Ferrite is a solid solution of carbon and iron. It’s the most common type of cast irons which offer good physical properties, such as high strength at room temperature, moderate ductility, and toughness, relatively low hardness level that can be increased through the heat-treatment process. Ferrite has a grayish-white color with slightly yellow shades in certain conditions due to impurities. Pearlite type of cast iron is a mixture in which the carbon forms an interlocking network with ferrite, thus creating pearlite. It has a low yield strength level and relatively higher tensile strain than other types due to its lower toughness when compared with gray cast irons. It offers good corrosion resistance but not as much as gray cast iron does because it contains more alloy element impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus, and silicon that cause pitting and stress-corrosion cracking under certain conditions of exposure to the atmosphere or water containing oxygen or hydrogen sulfide gas. On the basis of Application, Global Gray Cast Iron Market is segmented into Machine Manufacture, Automobile Parts, Others. Gray cast iron is widely used in automobile applications due to its high degree of toughness, fatigue resistance, and good wear & abrasion properties when compared with other metallic materials like steel alloys or aluminum-based metal alloy parts that are manufactured for several automotive components such as chassis frames, cylinder blocks, transmission housings, etc. Its low-cost price also provides an excellent alternative solution for replacing expensive metals like nickel-based superalloy (e.g., Inconel) which cannot be easily worked on by traditional machining processes under certain conditions without deforming the component shape; thus increasing the production costs exponentially while reducing product life cycle within a short period because of corrosion issues in many applications.
Gray Cast Iron Market: Regional Analysis
On the basis of Region, Global Gray Cast Iron Market is segmented into North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East & Africa. The North American region is projected to be the largest market for gray cast iron during the forecast period due to increasing demand from several end-user industries such as packaging, automotive components, and machine manufacturers. The European region has the second-highest demand for gray cast iron during the forecast period because of their high degree of presence across different application sectors such as machine manufacturing & automobile parts; thus leading toward significant API consumption per capita ratio.
